Renegging on a job offer, NBA style

When the NBA comes calling to coach one of their teams, you'd think that people would be sure the job is for them. So when Billy Donovan decided to take the head coaching job of the Orlando Magic I thought it was a good move. He had just won 2 National Championships with the Florida Gators in college. What was left to prove?

He even went to a press conference with the media being introduced as the new head coach. Then suddenly a day later he wanted OUT of the job. Apparently he had a change of heart. Now he and the Magic are in negotiations to let him out of his million dollar contract.

So before you decide to accept that job offer, think long and hard about the move. Most people do that. But what was Billy Donovan thinking? I'd be embarrassed if I were him. I mean he went to a press conference, the team started selling a bunch of season tickets when they signed him. Now he wants out? Consider that bridge burned.

Perhaps he should have read this survey about finding the right fit. CHIMBY has some other advice on reneging on a job offer.

Interesting points you make about Billy Donovan. I definitely believe candidates should weigh options, pros and cons before saying yes, but in the world we live in today, I would rather people leave prior to starting the job than starting and then quitting. At least they were not into camp prior to the season.
