Characteristics of a 21st century job candidate

It's no secrets that today's up and coming generation of workers is the most web savvy ever born. A blog called Web Worker Daily has a cool post on the top 10 things you need to do to succeed in a web economy. Here's the 10 things and I would also add one more: Always be Learning. You should be constantly trying to improve your skills/knowledge through each stage of your career.

1. Reach out beyond yourself (meet new people)
2. Use multi-channel communications (IM, twitter, blogs, wikis, etc)
3. Learn to write effectively
4. Understand HTML and CSS (this is the web publishing era)
5. Learn to search effectively (Googling)
6. Experiment (try new things, don't be afraid to fail)
7. Question conventional wisdom
8. Manage RSS feeds
9. Recognize good ideas
10. Show courage (The web rewards bravery, so put yourself out there)

To this I'd like to add that if you're really going to be Web savvy, you must take into account just what are you going to put on the Web that will be acceptable to future employers.

It is becoming common practice now for employers to Google job canidates, and that is causing some otherwise qualified applicants to lose out on offers. A recent example features a 25-year old teacher who was denied a job because a picture of her was found on Myspace when she was still in college, dressed like a pirate. Some companies may find that objectionable.

It is also worth noting that some of us who are tech savvy are deliberately deciding to what extent we will use Web technology. It is interesting to note how few people in management actually write blogs or have their own Web sites. Age has nothing to do with it. Instead, it's about maturity which some Baby Boomers, Gen X'ers and Gen Y'ers do have.

It is really scary nowadays to have very good intentions and want to connect with people, only to have some future employer misinterpret our intentions. So along with the lifelong learning proposed, do note how many of us are learning just where and how we will make our presence known, online and off!
