Hey Jobseekers...Man or Machine?

Consider the comments of Thomas the Jobseeker the other day..."Being involved with computers seemed to be a way out of socializing with others, something I have a difficult time doing."

His quote got me thinking about the lack of communication skills among our college graduates which I've blogged about in the past. With the younger generations growing up immersed in computers they seem to favor email, instant messaging & texting over talking to a human. This trend is turning people into "keyboard communicators". I was listening to Rob McGovern's interview on Landed.fm where he also talks about this "Machine over Man" mentality.

So listen up job seekers...if you really want to get ahead in your career, get off the keyboard and improve your social skills. Being able to clearly communicate - human to human - is one of the best skills you can have in today's workplace. If you have the ability to persuade others, to make convincing arguments, to clearly stating your objectives... it will go a long way towards creating job security. Next time you start picking your college courses, find the public speaking 101 class and sign up.
